RENTAL RELIEF
A Lifesaver
for Landlords?
By Angeline Vachris Kell
Different Types of Rental Relief
The Texas Rental Relief program (TRR) was created to provide
housing and utility assistance and prevent housing instability
and widespread evictions. TRR provided up to eighteen months
of rental assistance and no more than $4,600.00 per month.
However, TRR will not provide future rent for more than
1
three months of rent at a time. Due to an overwhelming
2
response, the portal closed on November 5, 2021. After
that date, new applications were not accepted. The Texas
Eviction Diversion Program (TEDP) was created in con-
junction with the TRR program by the Texas Supreme
Court in an Emergency Order to allow landlords and
tenants alternative options to evictions. TEDP is
expected to expire on November 1, 2022, under the
current Texas Supreme Court Emergency Order.
According to the TRR, the program assisted
over 21,000 applicants and provided over 200
million dollars of relief. As of September
3
2022, TRR has nearly depleted all of its
funds. TRR is one of many rental relief
programs that began in the past
two years to assist those affected by
the Coronavirus.
