The
“VaLue” Confusion

I
n sales and life, the word value is used regularly. The word value conjures
different thoughts for everyone. All of these thoughts create confusion,
and that confusion creates a lack of clarity. The lack of clarity creates
missed opportunities to improve business performance as well as personal
interactions.
The first step one can take to end the confusion and gain clarity is to better
understand the definition. Through the dictionary, one learns that the word
value is both a noun and a verb, which supports the natural confusion about
this word (Webster’s 7 New Collegiate Dictionary).

Value is from the Latin word valere meaning “to be worth”. Noun definitions
include: “(1) fair return...in goods and services; (2) the monetary worth:
marketable price, degree of excellence, something intrinsically valuable or
desirable; or (8) denomination.”
